Renewable diesel produces 50% to 80% less greenhouse gas emissions than petroleum diesel does.

HF Sinclair is committed to being environmentally responsible and establishing sustainable practices. In 2022-2023, we completed a pretreatment unit (PTU) and two renewable diesel units (RDUs) at our facilities in Artesia, New Mexico, and in Cheyenne, Wyoming and acquired an RDU in Sinclair, Wyoming.

What is renewable diesel and how is it used?

Chemically identical to traditional petroleum diesel, renewable diesel is a low-carbon fuel made from renewable sources. It produces 50% to 80% less greenhouse gas emissions, while performing the same as regular petroleum diesel. Renewable diesel can be used anywhere that regular diesel is used, without modification to engines or infrastructure.

How renewable diesel made?

Renewable diesel is made sustainably with recycled animal fats from restaurants and supermarkets, as well as inedible corn and soybean oil. These materials, that would otherwise be thrown away, are converted into diesel fuel, producing a smaller impact on the environment and providing a cleaner alternative to regular diesel.

Why produce renewable diesel?

Demand for renewable diesel is growing and taking market share based on both consumer preferences and support from federal and state government incentive programs. The demand for renewable diesel is expected to increase as states and countries continue advancing low-carbon fuel standard programs, particularly California and Canada. HF Sinclair is advantaged by our geographic footprint and close proximity to feedstock and existing and emerging low-carbon fuel markets.

What is a pretreatment unit (PTU)?

The PTU gives us the flexibility to use many different kinds of feedstock (source material) – including lower-priced unrefined soybean oil and lower carbon intensity animal fats and distillers corn oil – which reduces risk of shortages. The PTU can pre-treat over 80% of the feedstock for the RDUs.
